One of my favorite things is reading. I love finding new authors and books to explore. I especially have a fondness for children’s books. Perhaps it stems from the educator that is ingrained in me. In college, one of my favorite classes was “Reading for the Elementary Teacher”. The professor opened my world to a whole new reading experience. Recently, I received the opportunity to review Nothing by Natalee Creech published by WorthyKids, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.

About the Author and Illustrator
Natalee Creech is a former teacher, who taught twelve years in South Korea. When she was a teacher, she struggled to find books that taught in a manner that kids enjoyed. Using rhymes, and poetry, she found that she could write materials that were far more engaging. She is now a librarian and enjoys teaching children scriptures by making it fun and entertaining.
About the Book
This 32 page, hard-cover book is sturdy and durable. It provides a take on Romans 8:38-39, which reads, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our LORD.”
Throughout the story, the characters are exploring whether God will love them through a variety of scenarios. Volcanoes, storms, and under the sea are all brought into question. The answer is this very powerful rhyme “There is nothing so powerful, nothing so strong-God’s love is too high and too deep and too long!”
How did we use it?
We used this book in a variety of ways. I read it aloud to my children collectively. They each read it on their own. We read it when they were afraid of doing something, or if they were feeling sad. Nothing by Natalee Creech led itself to so many different scenarios and reading experiences.
What did we think?
The story itself is whimsical and well written. Natalee Creech really portrayed accurate questions that kids would possess about the power of God’s love. As I read it, I could picture my own children questioning times when God’s love might not be available to them. Some of the scenarios that I pictured them questioning, such as in outer space, were used.
The illustrations are simply beautiful. Joseph Cowman provided illustrations that perfectly follow the message of the story and add depth to the words that are written.
We loved reading this story. We each felt warm, and cozy while being reassured that God’s love for us transcends time and fear. While geared for a young elementary school aged child, but children learned that God loves us all the time. This lesson is something that children and adults alike should know. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to be reminded that God loves them. Nothing by Natalee Creech would make a great gift for births, children who are going through changes, Easter, birthdays, Christmas, or just as an everyday reminder.
