Science has always been one of my weaker areas. Both as a student, and as a classroom teacher. I loved the way that students interacted with science, but I was never really interested in the actual science. It is because of this that I have worked diligently to ensure that my children receive an well-rounded science experience. We were recently given the opportunity to review a year subscription for e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum from Supercharged Science.
What is it?
e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum is an online database of homeschool science lessons, quizzes, videos, tele-cast classes, and experiments. The user can choose to search lessons by grade levels, or by topics.
The grade levels available range from Kindergarten to High School.
There are a wide variety of topics available for study. Twenty units cover topics such as the following: Mechanics, Motion, Matter, Energy, Sound, Sound, Astrophysics, Chemistry, Light, Electricity, Magnetism, Alternative Energy, Thermodynamics, Electronics, Life Science, Biology and Earth Science.
The goal of Supercharged Science and Aurora Lipper is to provide the user with homeschool science activities that are engaging, but also teach the scientific concepts effectively. When teaching science, you are faced with the problem of dealing with a variety of learning styles. Auditory, Kinesthetic, Visual and even digital learning are ways in which children can and do learn science. Auditory learners learn best by hearing the information. These children do well with lecture courses, audio books, etc. Visual learners need to see the information in order to learn it. They need to see the information being presented. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing. They need to be the ones physically doing the work. Digital Learning occurs not just on a computer screen, but also by reading the words in print. When teaching science to our children, we need to provide them with opportunities in all of these learning styles. E-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum provides science concepts in a wide variety of styles, to reach all of the above mentioned learning styles.
What Does a Unit Look Like?
Unit 18, Biology 1, begins with an overview of what the user will be learning, as well as why these topics are important for them to learn. Understanding the what and why are fundamental for children. This information is presented both in text and video format.
On the sidebar, you are given the opportunity to download the unit in a pdf format. The unit provides a “Table of Contents” providing the user with a list of topics and lessons that will be learned.
A materials list for experiments is also provided for the user. It is important to note that this list is for every activity in the unit. Prior to purchasing all of the materials, determine which activities you want to incorporate in your lessons.
Key vocabulary and lesson objectives are also provided for users.
Textbook reading is also available. This provides the user with background information, and key concepts that need to be learned in the form of written words, pictures, and diagrams.
Activities and experiments follow the textbook reading. These activities are varied in complexity. Some activities are very simple, while others are more in-depth.
Following the activities and experiments are exercises. These are important questions that the learned should be able to answer. Answers are provided. (I will mention how we used these further in this review).
Video also accompany the units. They are used to show the experiments or other key ideas.
How We Used It?
We received this product with only a couple of weeks left in our school year. Since it is a predominately online homeschool science curriculum, we found it easy to incorporate with our textbook curriculum. We picked a topic that we were studying and made it a more hands-on science curriculum.
When our school year ended, we continued using the product. e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum provided us with a variety of homeschool science projects and lessons.
All three of my children, grades 3-5 learned the same information. We worked all together on the activities and lessons. The homeschool science online provided us with a very in-depth understanding of concepts. If we did not have access to materials for an experiment, or could not do an activity, such as dissecting grasshoppers, we watched the video so that we could understand the process.
We used the exercises in a game format. We chose a game that we liked to play as a family. At the start of their turn, I would ask them one of the exercise questions. If they got it correct, they could proceed with their turn. If they did not, their turn ended, and the question went to the next player. My crew is very competitive, so if they did not get it correct they wanted to know why.
We kept a journal of our activities. They would often refer to these journals throughout the lessons. I found this to be extremely helpful for them.
What We Thought
A parent’s perspective
I loved e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum from Supercharged Science. I am already planning next years curriculum and using it to supplement my textbook curriculum. I believe this will provide my children with a very well-rounded homeschool science curriculum. e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum can be used in both ways, as a stand-alone curriculum, or as a supplement to another curriculum.
I loved how interactive the lessons were, and how in-depth the lessons were. My children learned a wide variety of concepts. Prior to receiving access for review, we had completed a free homeschool lesson that was made available from Aurora Lipper Science.
A kid’s perspective
All three of my children loved e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum from Supercharged Science. My daughter loved that she didn’t have to dissect the bugs, as we could watch them through the videos.
My oldest son loved that we were able to do a bird-watching activity to learn about colors that attract birds. We even had to set-up a hummingbird feeder after completing it. This has become one of our favorite things to do. We sit on the porch and watch the hummingbirds.
My youngest son loved doing the frog hunt. We found both a frog and eggs.
